RV Pilot Program How Will It Address The Issues?

If you were unable to attend the recent meetings held in East Gardena regarding the RV Protocol Program, attached is the information that provided to the community. The protocol addresses the RV’s and nothing further. The county is still working on the plan for street people living on the sidewalks and how they plan to enforce the areas once it has been cleaned up.

What We Are Doing To Assist our Homeless?
May 10, 2023

As your Chamber of Commerce, we are focused on the homeless and all the issues that are impacting our streets, railroad areas, and freeway easements. The unincorporated areas have historically lacked proper resources and very limited law enforcement. We took a different approach to find additional resources to help our area. Instead of sitting in an office, we began working on the streets. We started by reporting all the issues from illegal dumping, graffiti, stolen vehicles, compromised fire hydrants, nonworking street lights, illegal power connections and community clean ups. Suspicious fires began to happen with the RV’s. What we discovered during these incidents was alleged fires being set for non-payment of rent,

a lack of reporting to the elected officials regarding the fires. In 2022, the unincorporated areas experienced 179 RV fires. These fires took out infrastructure from internet, phones and power. Often times, causing local businesses to close for several days until the repairs were completed. For the first three months of 2023, the area saw 14 RV fires.

Red Curbs & Enforcement In The Unincorporated LA County Areas

The RV Pilot Program is scheduled to take effect at the end of May. This program will remove up to 75 nonworking, unregistered, no ownership RV’s from the streets throughout the Unincorporated LA County areas. The plan is to destroy those 75 RV’s and remove them from circulation. In addition, the county will take up to 15 RVs that are registered & in working condition to a newly created SafePark location where these individuals will have a place to park 24 hours/7 days a week and receive services including housing options.

I want to be very clear with our businesses, the enforcement piece once they are removed has not been shared with us. Therefore, I am asking EVERY business owner, building owner & resident to send emails to Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s office demanding official RED CURBS to be implemented immediately. Her office has the power to make this happen.

If you are a member of the Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce, I have sent a direct email with Supervisor Mitchell’s email address.

Working Hard To Find Solutions Before Someone Is Injured.

We are on the streets everyday. Reporting the waste, the graffiti and requesting aid for those living on the streets, in lots, in vehicles or near our freeways. It has been our top priority. We typically provide updates to the County, Law Enforcement, Elected Leaders, Edison & Golden State Water.

Yesterday, we requested Edison to disconnect some illegal power connections from Athens Way & 129th. This area has been notorious for illegal activity. What we discovered this morning was a first for us. Outlets being attached to the bases of the wooden power poles then connected to the transformers using a nail & copper wiring.

Arson Fire Unincorporated LA County East Gardena

An arson fire destroyed a vacant warehouse located at 128 W 154th Street in East Gardena. According to firefighters, this was the second incident at this location. It took firefighters over 2 hours to extinguish the flames. No one was injured.

The Best Way to Help The Unhoused, Homeless.

Our best resource for getting assistance to those living on our streets, in vehicles and/or near freeways is using www.LA-HOP.org. You can submit a request and typically within 48 hours, a team is dispatched to the location. These teams bring resources, services and options to those needing assistance.

When submitting the request, include as many details as possible. If there are any suspected mental health issues, please specify that in the request so mental health specialists will be deployed.

We Have Two Choices.

To Report or Not To Report. Graffiti impacts all of our neighborhoods. It is now a choice. We can report as soon as we see it or we can leave it & hope someone else reports it.

Typically, when graffiti is reported in the morning, it is removed the same day.

Listed below are the ways to report Graffiti for each jurisdiction. If you haven’t reported graffiti or other issues, give it a try, we promise you’ll see how simple & easy it is.

Coffee with LAPD & Other Happenings

March was a busy month for the Chamber of Commerce. We participated in Coffee with LAPD on Tuesday, March 28th at 711 located on Figueroa & El Segundo Blvd in the heart of Harbor Gateway North. Representatives from Mayor Bass’ office, Councilmember Tim McOsker’s office, Athens Park Concerned Citizens, and Officers from LAPD Southeast met with community members. If you are interested in hosting, Coffee with Law Enforcement, please let us know.

Saturday, March 25th, the first annual Clean California Day took place in Harbor Gateway with Caltrans. This partnership brought bulky item dumpsters for the community to bring unwanted treasurers and simply dispose of them. Students from Environmental Charter Middle School, Gardena High School, Gardena Elementary School, the Boys & Girls Club, and Keystone Club Members came together to clean up our beloved Gardena Blvd. Our partners at the City of Gardena had staff helping us clean up the Blvd as well.

Congratulations City of Gardena…

Thursday, March 30th, Mayor Tasha Credo gave her State of the City Update. The Nakaoka Community Center was packed with excited stakeholders, elected City Council Members and Mayors from the Cities of Carson, Compton, and Hawthorne.

Our partnership with the City of Gardena started back in 2018 with meetings held on Gardena Blvd to address the concerns impacting both sides of the Blvd. These meetings helped forge a strong bond between Harbor Gateway North and the City of Gardena.

Neighborhood Council Elections and Why They Matter To You?

Neighborhood Councils are the closest form of government to the people. They are advisory bodies, who advocate for their communities with City Hall & the local Council Office on important issues like development, homelessness, emergency preparedness and chronic issues impacting the safety of the neighborhoods.

There are 99 Neighborhood Councils representing each community within the City of Los Angeles. There are two neighborhood councils representing the community of Harbor Gateway. Harbor Gateway North has a boundary from the 91 Freeway to 111th Street between the East side of Vermont to the West side of Figueroa Street. To complicate the boundaries, the East Side of Figueroa starting Compton Blvd heading north, the first 30 feet belong to the City of Los Angeles and the remaining area belongs to the County of Los Angeles. This creates confusion for nearly every business along the East side of Figueroa.
