October 25th Update.

RV Encampment Removals are tentatively scheduled to begin on November 6th on the following streets of East Gardena:

157th between Figueroa & San Pedro

Broadway between Alondra & 157th

Main Street between Alondra & Redondo Beach Blvd

The HOST team from LASD, LAHSA, HOPICS & St Joseph’s Center began notifying those living in the RV’s, and on the sidewalk of the upcoming clean up. This will be our second location for Pathway To Home Program.

Out of the box thinking. Creative problem solving. We are working to bring additional resources to mitigate the chronic waste issues in the business corridors. On Monday, October 30th at 10am, the county will provide large dumpsters on Compton Blvd to remove all the bulky items and bags of waste. We are working with the homeless to get them involved in this clean up. The Chamber will provide gloves, shovels, brooms and hand sanitizer. The county will provide trash bags and the dumpsters. This is a “first” for the county. Everyone is welcome to help.

Community Safety Meeting

SAFETY has always been our top priority. Keeping the streets safe by working together with our law enforcements partners, sanitation and elected officials on a daily basis by providing critical updates on the issues impacting all of our neighborhoods from the Unincorporated areas, Community of Harbor Gateway and the City of Gardena.

We are bringing everyone together to discuss the uptick in gang activity from graffiti/tagging, assaults and shootings impacting every area we serve.

This is our opportunity to have an open discussion on the issues and how we can keep everyone safe.

It’s time we become proactive and not reactive.

In Memoriam, Ryan G.

This evening, I received the sad news of the passing of Ryan, our webmaster and friend. It once again reminds me of how fragile life can be and to cherish the time we have here on the planet.

Ryan had been doing our website and stuck with us through the tough times. He was often at our events supporting our efforts to help reshape our communities. He leaves behind a family.

Is Living In An RV Truly Housed?

This morning during a clean up in Harbor Gateway, the individuals living in this situation simply walked away, declining all services. I was contacted to assist a single father with two young small children and to see what resources were available for them. It hurts my heart to witness children living in this type of environment. With all the funding and programs available, a single father with children does not have many options for help. The majority of programs only allow mothers with children. Hotel vouchers are non-existent at this point or in this situation.

Do we simply allow them to be displaced onto the street?

Working Towards Better Communication.

We are working on additional ways to get pertinent information out to the community in real-time. SMS or Texting is our newest option. This is a new resource for us. We will only use the SMS option for urge matters.

FORTY EIGHT RV FIRES. 1st Arson Investigation.

On Sunday, September 10th, we had our 48th RV fire on Compton Blvd. The impact from the fire took out power for the majority of businesses on the south side of the street.

What was different on this fire? We now have an assigned arson investigator from LA County Fire. Our firefighters determined this fire was intentionally set. The Arson Investigator was on-scene within 1 hour along with the HOST team.

The vehicle was removed from the location within 3 hours.

RESCHEDULED SAFETY MEETING NOW OCTOBER 4TH.

In 2019, we started a Gardena Business Alliance to address the issues impacting local, small businesses operating along Gardena Blvd in the community of Harbor Gateway. That initial group created partnerships with the City of Gardena, Gardena Police Department, LAPD Southeast Station, Caltrans and local business leaders. This small group met on a bi-weekly basis to discuss the issues and create solutions. Updates were provided by law enforcement and both agencies worked together.

Amid homelessness crisis, stretch of LA County has become an RV wasteland

EAST GARDENA, Calif. (KABC) — The streets of East Gardena and West Rancho Dominguez weren’t designed to be an RV park.

But they’re home to hundreds of run-down RVs without any services.

This is unincorporated Los Angeles County and the homeless who live here are just trying to survive.

“It sucks. Nothing works. The restrooms. Sewers. The trash,” said Erin Echavarria, who lives in one of the RVs.

The RVs are parked on public property, with the largest concentrations on Compton Boulevard and Redondo Beach Boulevard.
